For generations, people built homes using locally available materials and techniques suited to their surroundings. Today, many of these practices are becoming harder to access because of changes in building knowledge, skilled labour and material availability.
But what does it take to rediscover and apply these techniques today?
In this practical webinar, Meher Gundavarum, Co-Founder of Elephant In You, will introduce six traditional building techniques, drawing on his experience with natural construction. The session will cover three wall-building techniques, including cob, wattle and daub, and adobe bricks, along with three traditional roofing approaches, including thatching, clay tiles and living roofs. Through photographs and practical examples, Meher will explore the materials used, how each technique works and what to consider when choosing suitable methods for different locations and climatic conditions.

Meher Gundavarum is the co-founder of Elephant In You, an initiative exploring how everyday essentials such as food, clothing and shelter can be rethought to help us live more closely in tune with nature.
A mechanical engineer by training, Meher spent several years working in engineering and technology before returning to India to put these ideas into practice. At his farm near Warangal, Telangana, he has explored growing food, natural clothing and building a zero-cement studio using local materials and traditional building techniques.
In this session, Meher brings his first-hand experience of building differently, sharing what he learnt about choosing materials, working with local knowledge and combining traditional approaches with modern needs.
